What tent should I get?

Monday, December 28th, 2009

I just got elected Senior Patrol Leader of my scout troop. Thus far I’ve been able to get by without a tent but I figure I should probably get one now. I need a tent that’s fairly lightweight for camping trips. Thankfully, we don’t do too many long backing hikes(at most 4-7 miles), so it doesn’t have to be feather weight. Does anyone know what percent of your pack the tent should weigh? I’m debating between this three person tent (some sites say it can hold four)
http://www.dickssportinggoods.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2781729 and this two person tent.
http://www.dickssportinggoods.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2781727 The three person weighs about ten pounds :0 but the two person weighs only three. However, it’d be nice to have extra room so I can have another scout in mine, since we don’t have enough tents.
I have a gift card to Dick’s, so I’d be nice if I could find one from there.

I just recently bought a tent from http://www.appytrails.com.
It will sleep up to 5 people and only weighs 1 pound 11 ounces. The man that owns the company is a scout leader in Tennessee. I have used the tent several times now and couldn’t be more please with it.

When it comes to backpacking it doesn’t matter how long or how short your hike is going to be. Weight matters. My previous tent was a Eureka that only weighed 5.5 pounds. Add this to everything else in my pack and the total weight was almost 50 pounds. After doing a shakedown on my pack i was able to bring the weight down to 25 pounds. I then bought my new tent shedding roughly 4 more pounds. my total pack weight is now 21 pounds.

check out the Appy Trails tent they have 2 models a 3 man and a 5 man. The 3 man is only a little over one pound.

Is their anyone who has an Aliner, Expedition Cabin A that has added the add on tent? That fits on SUV’s?

It sleeves onto your unit without making it permanent?

Yes, but I just couldn’t get the hang of installation and had to return it. It took me over an hour and I was done.

does anyone know where to find free camp equipment for scouts in denver co?

Monday, December 28th, 2009

we are looking for free or low cost tents, cooking supplies, tarps, and anything usefull for Girl Scout Camping. I would be willing to pick up in Denver/Metro Colorado area, if close enough

Many councils and service units have camping equipment to loan out, from tents to cooking sets to first aid kits.

You can make some of your gear, instructions are at:

http://www.backpacking.net/makegear.html

There are all kinds of PVC structures, including a flag stand, table, wash station, etc. at:

http://www.gspiglet.org/

Also, if you see something at a garage sale or thrift store, tell them you want it for Girl Scouts. I’ve found many times the people will heavily discount things for Scouts.

Freecycle is a wonderful resource for stuff like this, too, I agree you should check it out.

I would love to go tent camping. but have a lot of allergies. Are there any tents that would keep all that out

Saturday, December 26th, 2009

I’m specifically concerned about smoke from grills and gases from stoves. Thanks so much

You can cook on propane stoves, and have almost no fumes. When you sit around the fire, sit upwind. I love wilderness camping in N. Canada. Up there, hardly anybody has trouble with any allergies. Setting tents up 50′ upwind from fire and cooking area cuts down smoke and fumes to almost zero.

Math Homework Need Help!!!?

A manufacturer of tents makes a standard model and a lightweight model for distribution. Each Standard tent requires 3 labor hours from the assembly department and 1 labor hour from the cutting department. Each lightweight tent requires 4 labor hours from the assemble department and 2 labor hours from the cutting department. The maximum labor hours available per day in the assembly and cutting departments are 84 and 32, respectively. If the company makes a profit of $45 on each standard model and $75 on each lightweight model, how many of each type of tent should be manufactured each day to maximize the total daily profit.

A) State the objective function and the linear constraints.

Objective Function:

Linear Constraints:

B) Graph the feasible region:

16 Standard Tents
8 Lightwieght Tents

Use 80 hours of Assembly Labor and 32 hours of Cutting labor.
Overall Profit of $1,220 per day.

Feel free to do the rest yourself :)

Should we sleep in tents or spring for a cabin with a heater for a camping trip we are going on over New Years?

Saturday, December 26th, 2009

Last year when we were just bf/gf we went Winter camping and stayed in a tent in this lovely campground run by a really nice couple. They had a New Years Party for all the campers plus we got to watch the Rose Parade followed by a football game in Pasadena Ca the next day. They had a fire going in the fire place and it was soooo nice. We met some really nice older people too

Ok, they e mailed me and said that a family that was coming had to cancel and wanted to know if we wanted their cabin. It’s two bedrooms with a small kitchen (and a bathroom with a shower). This year we are Man and Wife (lol lol) and I’m the wife (pregnant wife at that!!). Two other campers will be going with us. Two little teenage age boys who happen to be sooo very gay. One is my younger brother and the other little boy is my husband’s younger brother. They recently came out of the closet to us their loving and super tolerant older sister and brother lol. They are still deeply embedded in the closet with our respective parents and thinking that they are only two good friends our families suggested that we take them along. I think the cabin is a better option because my husband and I can supervise them better. In a tent who knows what might happen with those two alone. I’ve already told them that Nothing!! gay better happen between them accept holding hands and goo goo eye looks at each other. The cabin is like more expensive but I think I could get the parents to pay the extra cost (maybe the entire cost because he and I don’t have much money).

definitely spring for the cabin with the heat! It’s winter! you don’t want those 2 gay boys to have to keep each other warm with just body heat.

where can I buy cheap backpacking equipment?

Saturday, December 26th, 2009

I’m going to the south pacific and southeast asia, and I do not have any equipment. Where can I get a cheap but good-quality backpack, sleeping bag, tent, and other camping and traveling gear. VERY LOW BUDGET!

For a really low-budget and lightweight backpacking stove, build yourself a Pepsi-can alcohol stove.

http://www.pcthiker.com/pages/gear/pepsistove.shtml

If you’ll be camping in warm weather, it will be lighter and probably more comfortable to get a lightweight net hammock, bug screen, and rain fly instead of dragging around a tent.

Great deals on backpacking equipment can also be found at Goodwill and other thrift stores, garage sales, etc.

Another option is to borrow gear from friends. I’ve let several friends borrow a backpack for travels to distant lands.

Are there any "luxury" camping tents out there?

Friday, December 18th, 2009

ugh! I hate camping and every year our school makes the class go on a "bonding trip" in the "great outdoors…gag. Are there any tents out there that aren’t actually tents? haha…well, are there any luxury tents or anything that keeps me off the grass…and actually protected from the weather?

When tent camping, I think an air mattress makes all the difference in the world. Buy a nice one that has a built in pump so it will automatically inflate and deflate. Bring a cozy blanket and a pillow and you’ll be all set.
Much cheaper than a new tent.
Have fun!

camping in a park with a tick problem will staying in a cabin be better then a tent?

Friday, December 18th, 2009

I am going camping for one night so i can go to washington d.c. in the morning. All the campgrounds in the area have tick warnings. One park even basically told me it was so bad i shouldn’t come. the washington d.c./koa didn’t tell me not to come but did say the ticks were bad. I have the option to stay in a cabin or use my tent. will staying in a cabin avoid any ticks or is it just as bad as staying in a tent?

also …. ive never been camping at a campsite before … anything i should know??

Ticks can get in the cabins too. However, most places that rent cabins spray them or have an exterminator spray them for termites and other insects.

If you are thinking of staying in the cabin, call the campground and ask if the cabin has been sprayed for ticks and if so, how long ago.

Many chemicals used today have some short expirations, even when an exterminator applies them.

We always spray our campsite when car camping as we are in an area that has tick problems. We carry a water hose and the type of handheld sprayer that attaches to the hose. It is very easy to use.

We use Ortho or Spectracide outdoor insect products. Read the label carefully.

Set the dial to the rate per gallon as specified on the chemical you are using. This is usually 1.5 to 3 ounces per gallon.

Hook up to the water at the site and spray. Don’t set up any equipment until after the area has dried. We spray as early as we can and set up camp as late as we can.

We have found this to be very effective in getting rid of ticks, fire ants, ants, spiders, chiggers, and red bugs. It helps some with mosquitoes.

Since you are only going for one night, you may want to forget spraying and just bath yourself in 100% Deet and take a shower in the morning.

The thing you should remember when camping at a campsite in a campground is that it has been used over and over. Maybe even the day before you get there. A lot of times, the campers before you were not as neat as you, and dropped food all over the ground. This food is attracting all the insects in the area. Be especially careful in the sites that have the gravel pads as the food works under the gravel and you can’t see it to get it out of your site. You also can’t see the insects as well on this gravel surface.
