What are some good places for tent camping in NY state?

Saturday, November 28th, 2009

I live just outside buffalo and I’m looking for a good place to camp with my new tent in the summer. I need to know a place or a website that names places to go.

If you are looking for a really great place that is truly secluded, then try Indian Lake in Adirondack Mountains. You can take a boat out to an island, and camp there. You can rent boats if you don’t have one. The mountains are beautiful, the lake is good for fishing, swimming and other activities. It is secluded and you don’t have lines or RV’s. Best in July and August.

Ideally we would want somewhere where we could go rafting nearby on saturday. no cabins, just tents and a fire and all that. any good suggestions? doesn’t have to be north jersey necessarily.. but that area.. PA or something too.

Try searching for "camping and rafting in new jersey". These should get you started.

Suggestions for containers to carry equipment for camping?

Saturday, November 28th, 2009

My boyfriend and I have gotten heavily into camping (campground camping, using a tent….no RV) We’ve gotten pretty good at organizing and bringing everything we need without bringing too much extra stuff, but the one thing I haven’t gotten completely nailed down is the best way to carry/transport all the supplies. You know, stuff like cooking utensils, plastic bags for leftovers, paper towels, cans of sterno, etc. I have been just carrying them in those mesh bags that the grocery stores are selling these days for people to us instead of grocery bags. While this gets the job done, I have a feeling there’s a better way to organize my stuff so that I’m not constantly rummaging through bags looking for things. I was considering Rubbermaid-type containers but thought I’d ask for ideas in case others have a really great system to share. Thanks !

The plastic type containers with the snap on lids work fine. Find them at Walmart, Dollar Stores, etc. Organize all your things into piles and measure the longest/largest objects. The plastic containers come in all shapes (and sometimes different colors) and you don’t want them to be an inch short. They stack nicely in the back of your vehicle. When you arrive at the camp site, you can unload them and stack them around the site where you will use them. They are waterproof, but not critter proof.

The smoother the top the better it will shed the rain, so think about that when you pick them out.

Keep one for the "dirty" stuff that is used in the campfire, like pie irons and pans to keep the black soot from other items.

Best lake tahoe campground for tent camping with lake view?

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009

BF and i going camping for our anniversary. We’ve decided on Lake Tahoe, but are unsure of what campground is the best with good lake views and a quick walk to the shore. We will be tent camping. And also if you can give rates if you’ve been to the campground b4, that would be really awesome. THANKS!

Best view is emerald bay, 2nd is DL Bliss and followed closely by camp richardson.

All around choice I would pick DL Bliss. I watched 4th of Jul;y fireworks from there and saw them all around the lake. Your also closer to emerald bay for some great hikes around the point.

Camp Richardson is close to town and the casino’s so it is more of a party campground but it does have some great view’s and nice beaches.

Reservations are a must and go quickly

Good luck!

Best display Walls for art fairs for cheap?

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009

I’m trying to find lightweight easy to assemble boards for a 10′ x 10′ space for art fairs. I’ve seen cubicle walls but those are very heavy. I’ve also seen professional display boards and those are very expensive.
The best thing I’ve seen are metal framework sorts of things that I am not sure what exactly you would call.
Does anyone have any suggestions of a website where these could be found for a reasonable price? Or even what the metal ones might be called?
Also, I am NOT referring to a tent, I need something to support the weight of the art work.
Thanks!

Use 4′X8" sheets of pegboard, screwed to 1"x2" white pine frames.

Paint and trim as desired, and appropriate for your event.

If you need them self standing, include feet on the bottom of the panels.

If teh event provides a stall, use cable ties to attach panel to stall poles. Easy on/easy off.

What would be a good idea for a birthday cake for 10 year old?

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009

We will be going camping,so I have to either transport it or make it there.Cabin, not tent!Any marshmallow cakes out there?
This is for a girl who loves to camp, hike, loves little creatures, etc.
Woops , she will be turning 11..that does make a difference, just ask an 11 year old….

I would have someone else make it & then go pick it up. Being she loves the outdoors maybe you could do a Snow White theme. Because Snow White travels through the woods. Maybe you could have her sitting on the fallen log & all the forest animals are surrounding her. It’d be very cute!

Tent camping recommendations in Southern Maine?

Monday, November 23rd, 2009

We are planning to go tent camping this summer in Southern Maine. Does anyone have any favorites? Does anyone have any advice on places to stay away from?

I would vote Sebago Lake State Park. Hands down. Terrific lake for swimming, and boating if you choose. Beach to hang out on, and shady trees around the sites. You can reserve sites, but there are also sites that you have to just show up to get. There is access to bathrooms and showers. Super affordable and in my opinion, better than a commercial campground.

Compact backpacking tent for $50?

Monday, November 23rd, 2009

I’m looking for a compact (though not necessarily ultra lightweight) backpacking tent. The folded size can’t be more than 16" long. Ideally, the poles wouldn’t be prone to breaking like some I’ve read. It needs a rainfly too.

I saw the High Peak Hyperlite, along with a lot of others, and my main objection is that it might not last because of the poles.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Please don’t give advice on tents you haven’t tried.

I have had great luck using Eureka tents. They have shapes and sizes for just about ever kind of backpacking you can do…and they are affordable.
